Pollyanna , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 356min
Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter is a children's book focusing on the life of a little orphan girl. The orphan Pollyanna is forced to live with her strict Aunt Polly, who resents having to look after Pollyanna, because both of her parents passed away. The young girl's room is a stuffy attic with no decorations or comforts, and Aunt Polly maintains strict rules and shows Pollyanna very little affection. Pollyanna tries to stay happy by playing what she calls the "Glad Game". Slowly, Pollyanna's sunny disposition and Glad Game start to affect the town of Beldingsville. In every situation, Pollyanna insists that there is always something to be glad about. Eventually, even her Aunt Polly starts to appreciate Pollyanna's positive outlook. However, disaster strikes when Pollyanna is hit by a car and becomes paralyzed, unable to walk. When she learns that she has lost the use of both legs, Pollyanna becomes very sad and distant. She stays in her bed and decides that there is nothing to be happy about. The townspeople of Beldingsville start to call on Pollyanna and remind her how much she has helped each person in the town live a happier life. With this support, Pollyanna realizes that at least she has the memories of being able to walk. Her aunt sends Pollyanna to a special hospital and Pollyanna undergoes physical therapy to regain the use of her legs giving Pollyanna a strong appreciation for her health and eventually her positive attitude returns. ungekürzt. Luck of the Devil: My Life as a Drug Smuggler , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 516min
Forget The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Weeds, Blow or any other show that has tried to show the mafia or drug dealer lifestyle. Luck of the Devil is the real story of what actually happened "behind the scenes" in the world of drug smuggling in the 1970s and 1980s as told by someone who actually lived it. Luck of the Devil follows Jack Collins fresh out of the Navy in 1969 as he heads to Miami. There, he falls into the hippie culture of the day. Looking to score free drugs for himself and his friends, he starts dealing blow and pills on the side. Jack eventually grows into the "bigger" game of pills and cocaine as he establishes relationships with the Colombians. Eventually his "street wise" experience allows him to meet some of the biggest players in the world and he becomes one of primary smugglers for the Colombian cartels and an Italian mafia family from Rome. If you ever wondered what the life of a drug lord as really like, not as it's portrayed on TV and in film, then Luck of the Devil will open your eyes to the seedy underside of one of the most lucrative and profitable businesses in the world. WARNING: This book is meant for mature listeners only. Luck of the Devil contains graphic descriptions of brutal violence, wild sex, prolonged drug use, and lots of profanity. God and the Editor: My Search for Meaning at the New York Times , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 667min
For nearly 20 years Robert H. Phelps ran interference for, cheered on, and sometimes scolded star reporters and top editors at The New York Times. Starting his editing career at the desk of the Providence Journal-Bulletin, Phelps joined The New York Times as a copy editor, eventually serving as the Times news editor for the Washington bureau. Along the way he struggled with balancing his moral ideals and his personal ambition. In this compelling memoir, Phelps interweaves his personal and professional experiences with some of the most powerful stories of the era. With candor and keen observation, Phelps chronicles both the triumphant and the tragic events at the Times. He explains the missed lessons of the Pentagon Papers, why the Times played catchup with the Washington Post on the Watergate scandal but eventually surpassed it on covering that seminal story, and how the Times failed to report a key element of the riots at the 1968 Democratic convention. Phelps offers mixed appraisals of such luminaries as A. M. Rosenthal, James B. Reston, E. Clifton Daniel, and Max Frankel, and expresses great admiration for Seymour Hersh, Neil Sheehan, and Bill Beecher, three unlikely scoop artists. As Phelps settled in at The New York Times, journalism became the religion he had searched for since his adolescence. Over his tenure of nearly two decades, however, Phelps found that journalism's stark emphasis on fact was insufficient to address many of life's dilemmas and failed to provide the sustaining guidance he envied in his wife's Catholic faith. ungekürzt. A Stand-Up Guy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 650min
Oliver Miles is a stand-up comedian who makes his real living as a third-shift security guard at an historic Nashville hotel. Every morning on his way home from work, he stops to have breakfast with his mother, although it's been six years since she's recognized her only son. In search of his true comic voice, Oliver experiments with the juxtaposition of both highbrow and lowbrow humor, alternating between the cerebral, sarcastic, surreal, and inane. One night, an impromptu rant on relationships turns excruciatingly personal and Oliver finds himself reduced to quiet tears onstage. The crowd finds this hilarious. Oliver finds it embarrassing, yet cathartic; then later resolves to only tell the truth in his act. As he becomes more enamored with Mattie Holmgren, the hotel's night auditor, he discovers her sneaking into guest rooms in the middle of the night. Eventually, his infatuation for the adorable kleptomaniac haunting the very hotel he's been hired to protect becomes fodder for his stand-up act. His lack of sleep, combined with the realization that the only place he can be totally honest is in a room full of strangers, combine to stoke his greatest fear: Oliver is turning into his mother. As his relationship with Mattie begins to blossom, it becomes clear he won't be able to keep her away from his shows forever. Oliver must eventually come clean - to see if the truth really will set him free. As usual, he decides to do it from the stage... on the biggest night of his career... and with Mattie Holmgren watching. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Adam Black. Winners Dream: A Journey from Corner Store to Corner Office , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 621min
A leadership and career manifesto told through the narrative of one of today’s most inspiring, admired, and successful global leaders. In Winners Dream, Bill McDermott - the co-CEO of the world’s largest business software company, SAP - chronicles how relentless optimism, hard work, and disciplined execution embolden people and equip organizations to achieve audacious goals. Growing up in working-class Long Island, a 16-year-old Bill traded three hourly wage jobs to buy a small deli, which he ran by instinctively applying ideas that would be the seeds for his future success. After paying for and graduating college, Bill talked his way into a job selling copiers door-to-door for Xerox, where he went on to rank number one in every sales position he held and eventually became the company’s youngest-ever corporate officer. Eventually, Bill left Xerox and in 2002 became the unlikely president of SAP’s flailing American business unit. There, he injected enthusiasm and accountability into the demoralized culture by scaling his deli, sales, and management strategies. In 2010, Bill was named co-CEO, and in May 2014 he will become SAP’s sole, and first non-European, CEO. Colorful and fast-paced, Bill’s anecdotes contain effective takeaways: gutsy career moves; empathetic sales strategies; incentives that yield exceptional team performance; and proof of the competitive advantages of optimism and hard work. At the heart of Bill’s story is a blueprint for success and the knowledge that the real dream is the journey, not a preconceived destination. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bill McDermott.
