Political Biology
This book explores the socio-political implications of human heredity from the second half of the nineteenth century to the present postgenomic moment. It addresses three main phases in the politicization of heredity: the peak of radical eugenics (1900-1945), characterized by an aggressive ethos of supporting the transformation of human society via biological knowledge; the repositioning, after 1945, of biological thinking into a liberal-democratic, human rights framework; and the present postgenomic crisis in which the genome can no longer be understood as insulated from environmental signals. In Political Biology, Maurizio Meloni argues that thanks to the ascendancy of epigenetics we may be witnessing a return to soft heredity - the idea that these signals can cause changes in biology that are themselves transferable to succeeding generations. This book will be of great interest to scholars across science and technology studies, the philosophy and history of science, and political and social theory.- Shop: buecher

Lose Your Fear, Find Your Voice: The Fast Track to Professional Public Speaking , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 110min
Have you ever struggled to stand up and speak in front of an audience? You may be able to relate in some part to my story, being asked to speak to a group of people and feeling under-prepared. You may be able to relate to the crippling fear and the irrational thoughts that take over your normally rational mind. If this is such a feared topic, why would anyone want to improve or even master this skill? It is human nature to move towards experiences that give us pleasure and move away from experiences that cause us pain, so listening to an audiobook on public speaking appears to be counter intuitive to say the least. However, the fact remains that public speaking is an important skill and it is fundamental in many careers, particularly in management and leadership roles, regardless of the industry or even the country you operate in. Perhaps most importantly, public speaking is completely transferable. This book is designed to help you with four things: Provide the tools to become the best version of you during your speech or presentation Show you how to craft a clear and concise speech Demonstrate techniques to allow you to deliver a compelling speech with style Give you a proven way to reduce your levels of anxiety of public speaking ungekürzt. Storming the City: US Military Performance in Urban Warfare from World War II to Vietnam , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 550min
In an increasingly urbanized world, urban terrain has become a greater factor in military operations. Simultaneously, advances in military technology have given military forces sharply increased capabilities. The conflict comes from how urban terrain can negate or degrade many of those increased capabilities. What happens when advanced weapons are used in a close-range urban fight with an abundance of cover? Storming the City explores these issues by analyzing the performance of the US Army and US Marine Corps in urban combat in four major urban battles of the mid-20th century (Aachen 1944, Manila 1945, Seoul 1950, and Hue 1968). Alec Wahlman assesses each battle using a similar framework of capability categories, and separate chapters address urban warfare in American military thought. In the four battles, across a wide range of conditions, American forces were ultimately successful in capturing each city because of two factors: transferable competence and battlefield adaptation. The preparations US forces made for warfare writ large proved generally applicable to urban warfare. Battlefield adaptation, a strong suit of American forces, filled in where those overall preparations for combat needed fine tuning. From World War II to Vietnam, however, there was a gradual reduction in tactical performance in the four battles. The book is published by University of North Texas Press. ungekürzt. Teach to Work: How a Mentor, a Mentee, and a Project Can Close the Skills Gap in America , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 419min
The United States is abundantly rich in adults with know-how. By connecting mentors - educated adults with expertise and knowledge - with mentees - teens and young adults who lack motivation, experience, and role models in their lives - we can begin to close this gap dramatically. We can prepare the next generation for the jobs of tomorrow by adding real-world, project-based experience to their education. Teach to Work is a call to action for mentors currently sitting on the sidelines. Whether you are a banker, a lawyer, an architect, an accountant, an engineer, an IT specialist, or an artist, you have the experience and skillset to become an ambassador of talent, grit, and transferable skills. The book provides a step-by-step guide to help professionals share their knowledge with the next generation of workers through this intergenerational experience. Based on Alper's 15 years of mentoring inner-city high-school students, Teach to Work proves how corporations, professionals, and boomers can have a significant impact on the professional future of America's youth. Drawing from real-life stories and letters received from students, teachers, and fellow mentors describing pride of accomplishment, Alper helps professionals embark on this journey to transform lives, mentoring one student at a time. Gabriel Born , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 562min
Sheila Jensen, desperate to invent a genetic cure, defies rules against combining animal and human DNA. She stirs outrage, so her fiancé and boss, Philip Ohl, blames her for the illegal and immoral work, destroying her career. Still, Sheila is motivated; her diagnosis will kill her, so she engineers her last ovum to make a deadly nerve-disorder cure. Risking her life, she bears the child, hoping her transferable DNA cure will work, but she can't find the cure in Gabriel's DNA. She loses faith; soon, her strength and health deteriorate. As Gabriel grows, her perception shifts. He is a prodigy who wins her wounded heart. She is shocked when he develops perfect blue wings at age five. All he wants to do is fly. Sheila can't contain him. When he flies, some of the watcher's consciousness joins him; his audience feels as if they fly, too. When video goes viral, devotees flock to watch the angel boy, hoping to join the ecstatic ride. Violent protesters arrive, too, spewing vitriol against him. Sheila flees with Gabriel, afraid Philip will claim her son. When he does so with a court order that shuts Sheila out, she fears for Gabriel. She knows the institution will do anything in the name of research. Gabriel has completely opened her heart, healed her, and given her a taste of unimagined freedom. Clearly, the only way to rescue him is to accept his expanded vision and allow him to teach her how to actually fly. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Emily Caldwell.
