The quartet around the Romanian-German NYC based violinist Frederika Krier was founded 2005. The musicians met during their study at the new Jazz Institut Berlin. Own compositions along with the unusual instrumentation of violin and electric guitar characterize the special sound of the band. The influences and categorisations seem to be full of opposites. Jazz, groove, free, minimalism, world music and new classical music melt together to an organic whole and actual contradictions connect with the greatest of ease. African rhythms build an synthesis with Indian scales, composition technique of Arnold Schoenberg and drum&bass grooves. But most important is always the creation in the moment, improvisation and personality of each single musician forming something new. This band fascinates with a unique mixture of clear, intellectually formed minimalistic compositions full of emotional depth, a supreme rhythmic complexity and an unbrakeable joy of playing. By the awake and interactive interplay of the four talented musicians there are created intensive lyrical, energyloaded and explosive improvisations and textures. All these are the characteristic features of this unusual and unique band that excites and convinces a growing audience. 'Today Frederika Krier is one of the golden names of the next generation of jazz musicians, whether we speak about the European or American scene. She was born in Timisoara, grew up in Germany and settled in the U.S. and will perform on July 22nd....promises to be one of the most exciting moments of the Garana Jazz Festival.' (www. Tion. Ro 2011) The second day opened with the remarkably fluid show of Frederika Krier Quartet--guitarist Peter Meyer, bassist Malte Tonissen and drummer Diego Pinera--performing a homogenous synthesis of jazz, minimalism and world music influences. Krier--an international jazz violinist and composer born in Romania, raised in Germany and presently living in New York--gave a dynamic performance characterized by tight, well-structured melodic sequences emerging from the tense, obsessive rhythmical patterns into inspiriting grooves. The first surprise of the festival. (allaboutjazz 2011) 'I would be remiss if I didn't mention how incredible were Frederica Krier and her super tight band' (the uptown collective NYC, August 2011) 'galactically good on the violin Frederika Krier' (Nordbayrische Nachrichten, Dez 2007) 'lucent sounds for the present' (Neue Tonne Dresden, march 2009) ' the young 'Frederika Krier Quartett' has broken fresh ground in composition and musical execution and these who let themselves in for that new at the Jazzkeller have experiences a special evening. Simplicity and exuberand joy of playing took turns, you could hear improvisation and inspiration and time and again Frederika Krier took over the musical lead.' (s'blättla Weinstadt, march 2009) 'and exceptional violinist in the field of jazz!' (Yorkschlößchen Berlin, march 2009) CD Review by Bruce Lee Gallanter: FREDERIKA KRIER QUARTETT With KALLE ZEIER/MALTE TONISSEN/MARTIN KRUMMLING - Devoted (Private Release, EEC) Frederika Krier on violin & compositions, Kalle Zeier on guitar & compositions, Malte Tonissen on acoustic bass and Martin Krummling on drums. Ms. Krier is a young Romanian-born, formerly Bavarian-based violinist who now lives in NYC. She's worked with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Frank Lacy & Rudi Mahall, amongst a number of the better Downtown & European musicians. She leads two bands, the Frederika Klier Quartett in Berlin and Molecular Vibrations in NY. Ms. Krier has played here at DMG on a few occasions with GL Diana on laptop and each set was pretty great. I wasn't sure what to expect when she left us with her quartet CD but I am glad she did. The Berlin-based Frederika Krier Quartett is/are a diverse and spirited bunch. Their music falls somewhere between progressive and jazz/rock. Three of the seven pieces were written by guitarist Kalle Zeier, his first piece is called 'Terror'. It is tight, quick and well written with intricate lines shared by the guitar and violin. This piece has that swell start and stop type of structure with spirited solos from Kalle's guitar and Frederika's violin. The rhythm team is also impressive and engaged. 'Fermions' starts with some cool popping harmonics on guitar, lilting bowed acoustic bass and trash-can like cymbal providing a hypnotic, rocking groove. While their guitarist uses some selective devices on his guitar wisely to alter his sound, Ms. Krier plays a number of exciting, crafty solos without the need of any alterations. I know that Frederika is a fan of early Jean Luc Ponty, the legendary jazz/rock violinist and at times her writing and playing seem to come from a similar area. 'Balladesk' is a haunting ballad written by Mr. Zeier with some lovely violin and guitar floating on top. Each song on this disc is a challenge for each member of the quartet as the rhythm, dynamics and structure evolves throughout. 'Devoted' is a most impressive debut from a fine violinist who has yet to turn 30. The title seems most appropriate since Frederika Krier is obviously devoted to her playing, composing and bandleading. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery.- Shop: odax

Songs from the Underbelly PT. 2
This is the final installment of the Songs from The Underbelly 4 part opus (an EP, 2 albums and a 7' single), written by rock & roll renegade Stephen Hartley. Starting off as guitarist in infamous cult punk band NOTSENSIBLES, Hartley has continued to tread the irreverent offbeat line, writing sharply observed songs delivered in a purist 3-piece garage band format. Widely acclaimed as a superb guitarist and great English songwriter, he has never bowed to commercial pressures, preferring always the low key DIY approach. As always the album features the hallmark Eli Records hand-printed cover - white lettering on black card, with a woodcut embossed in black ink - impossible to appreciate without holding the cover in your hand and holding it up to the light. The songs range from the exquisite fingerpicking of 'Dis Non' to the full on blistering thrash of 'Gastronomy'. Hartley includes Sick of Being Normal, one of his earliest songs, which first appeared on the NOTSENSIBLES 'Instant Classic' album.- Shop: odax

Luminous Baryton
Luminous Baryton I am very happy to play contemporary music on the whole - I thought I had already lost it when I left my desk in the orchestra to concentrate fully on period instruments. Later I was asked if I would order commissions for my rare instrument, the baryton. This needed some digesting before I dared to commission composers like Eero Hämeenniemi, Sampsa Ertamo and Tomi Räisänen. These works received premières during The International Baryton Symposium in Helsinki 2009. For a long time, Eero Hämeenniemi (b. 1951) had the idea of composing a work to the poem A Dong with a Luminous Nose by Edward Lear (1812-1888). Happily this came true in the work at hand. Throughout time the rare baryton has had something in common with his nightly solitude Wondering Dong, not forgetting The Candle in the Nose. This work is the first contemporary work in my repertoire - and it is no coincidence that the name of this CD is based on it. Max Savikangas (b. 1969) plays the viola and the initiative to make a commission came from Markus Sarantola, the violist of the Finnish Baryton Trio. Later, I was listening to more chamber music by Max and was always impressed by his individual colors of sound. I believe it is based on his continuing search for new playing techniques and his profound knowledge of stringed instruments. Some playfulness is also included. My first experience of Sampsa Ertamo's (b. 1973) music was playing in the première of his work Gamba Squad. I enjoyed a lot of Sampsa's harmonies, because I found them fresh. After the concert I asked if he would write some music for the baryton. A while later Sampsa called me to say that the work was in flow and was almost ready - "if it's ok?" The composer has invented a phonetic language that describes well the Sibylline prophecies of antiquity, prophecies which the temple priests translated to ordinary people. One night in Gaudí's Park and anything could happen, our trio could even sing... When introducing the baryton to Tomi Räisänen (b. 1976), he asked me to sing simultaneously when playing. Somehow I managed to do it. The finished trio had quite a bit of singing and we had to practise it for a while. A Night at the Park Güell is the most performed contemporary work in our repertoire and we always enjoy it's dark atmosphere. The night is full of wonders! The baryton is a bass viol, which has a set of bowed strings and second set of strings placed between the top and the fingerboard of the instrument. The baryton's neck is broader for the second set, also called the sympathetic strings, which are placed parallel to the bowed strings. The second set of strings may be plucked from behind the neck with the left thumb. The baryton was invented in England at the beginning of the 17th century. It's modern success is due primarily to the bulk of 175 works by Joseph Haydn. His contract in the court of Nikolaus Esterházy included composing all the court's music and over the course of ten years Prince Nikolaus frequently asked for new works for his favorite instrument, the baryton. I have given plenty of concerts of early music with the artists who appear on this recording. We have travelled and played together in different combinations and always in the best of spirits. Working with living composers has given us new perspective, and has been very interesting and often grand fun too. Our soprano Hanna Järveläinen has sung a lot of contemporary music, although she performs music mainly from renaissance to baroque in various ensembles. The repertoire of Varpu Haavisto includes music of our time as well as early music - she has both premièred and commissioned music for gamba from Finnish composers. The Finnish Baryton Trio made it's debut in 2002. Our dialogic method of working has proved to be fruitful and long lasting. Many recordings and concert tours at home and abroad have improved both our ensemble playing and our sense of humor. The members of the trio are Markus Kuikka, baryton, Markus Sarantola, viola, and Jussi Seppänen, cello. They all are frequently requested artists in many associations. The latest recording of the Finnish Baryton Trio - The Private Pleasure of Prince Esterházy - includes five baryton trios by Haydn and was released in 2009. Markus Kuikka is a Finnish baroque cellist and gamba player with a special interest in the rare instruments baryton and arpeggione (a bowed guitar played like cello). He was the principal cellist in an orchestra for a considerable time, but a growing interest in early music led to a new career with new instruments and to an artistic doctoral work and dissertation with the baryton and arpeggione. Along with giving concerts, Kuikka has also led the BarokkiKuopio Festival of early music. Luminous Baryton is part of his artistic work as an assistant professor in the doctoral school of The Sibelius Academy. Markus Kuikka, 2012.- Shop: odax

NILS BULTMANN: Nils Bultmann is a unique musician who fuses a wide variety of styles in music in creative multi-track recording, and is a blend of improvisation and composition. On this album, he is joined by Noah Onstrud on the Didgeredoo (Track 9), and Andy Ewen on electric guitar (Track 6&7). Nils' background is in classical music, both chamber music and orchestra. He is also active as a composer and works much with modern dance. He collaborates with world musicians and has recorded and toured with jazz saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell. This particular recording is experimental and rich in terms of the variety. Recommended sound bytes for this CD: #2: No.2: This is an intense rhythmic groove created using a pencil on the strings with two additional screaming bowed viola lines. #6: This selection features Andy Ewen on electric guitar and was created from an improvisation with Nils on keyboards. This Improvisation was then edited and layered with viola lines of excerpts from the Bach Cello Suite #5 Sarabande movement which fuses the piece together, #13: This expansive musical landscape features keyboards, multiple viola lines, prayer bowl, and some vocal sounds. #14: Solo Sonata for Viola: Through-composed work, recently featured in full score in the Journal of the American Viola Society.
