Throughout history, rich and poor countries alike have been lending, borrowing, crashing--and recovering--their way through an extraordinary range of financial crises. Each time, the experts have chimed, "this time is different"--claiming that the old rules of valuation no longer apply and that the new situation bears little similarity to past disasters. This book proves that premise wrong. Covering 66 countries across five continents, This Time Is Different presents a comprehensive look at the varieties of financial crises, and guides us through eight astonishing centuries of government defaults, banking panics, and inflationary spikes--from medieval currency debasements to today's subprime catastrophe. Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff, leading economists whose work has been influential in the policy debate concerning the current financial crisis, provocatively argue that financial combustions are universal rites of passage for emerging and established market nations. The authors draw important lessons from history to show us how much--or how little--we have learned. Using clear, sharp analysis and comprehensive data, Reinhart and Rogoff document that financial fallouts occur in clusters and strike with surprisingly consistent frequency, duration, and ferocity. They examine the patterns of currency crashes, high and hyperinflation, and government defaults on international and domestic debts--as well as the cycles in housing and equity prices, capital flows, unemployment, and government revenues around these crises. While countries do weather their financial storms, Reinhart and Rogoff prove that short memories make it all too easy for crises to recur. This Time Is Different exposes centuries of financial missteps. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Pratt. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/gdan/000329/bk_gdan_000329_sample.mp3. You can see that what motivates us is neither self-conceit or self-interest, but only a burning desire to join the battle in this grave 11th hour for our German Fatherland... One last thing I can tell you. Either the German revolution begins tonight or we will all be dead by dawn! - Hitler "I cannot remember in my entire life such a change in the attitude of a crowd in a few minutes, almost a few seconds... Hitler had turned them inside out, as one turns a glove inside out, with a few sentences. It had almost something of hocus-pocus, or magic about it." - Dr. Karl Alexander von Mueller It is often claimed that Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany through democratic means, and while that is a stretch, it is true that he managed to become an absolute dictator as Chancellor of Germany in the 1930s through a mixture of politics and intimidation. Ironically, he had set such a course only because of the failure of an outright coup attempt known as the Beer Hall Putsch about a decade earlier. At the close of World War I, Hitler was an impoverished young artist who scrapped by through selling souvenir paintings, but within a few years, his powerful oratory brought him to the forefront of the Nazi party in Munich and helped make the party much more popular. A smattering of followers in the hundreds quickly became a party of thousands, with paramilitary forces like the SA backing them, and at the head of it all was a man whose fiery orations denounced Jews, communists and other "traitors" for bringing upon the German nation the Treaty of Versailles, which had led to hyperinflation and a wrecked economy. ungekürzt. The Weimar Republic has become a byword for a failed, tragic political experiment. The official period of its existence, 1919-1933, marked the inter-war years in Germany and their related uncertainty, chaos, and the state’s ultimate collapse. Historians have found the roots of Nazism embedded in the Weimar years and that in the final analysis, Weimar politicians voluntarily handed over power to the man who wrought destruction on an epic scale, Adolf Hitler. Yet the Weimar era encapsulated a number of trends and fissures within German society, as well as the international community. The Weimar Republic was a prisoner of events and in the long run had little power to shape them. Historians are fond of interpreting the past as a tension between human agency, that is to say decision-making, and structural developments that evade individual choices. Both these interpretations are crucial when examining the tumultuous years of Germany’s Weimar Republic. German governments had teetered on the edge of collapse throughout the Weimar years, as politicians of all stripes had struggled to stabilize the economy and the wider societal problems. In the 14 years between 1919 and 1933, a total of 20 separate coalition governments had been formed. The most stable period, after the hyperinflation of 1923 and before the Wall Street Crash of 1929, was only calm in a relative sense. It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that the Weimar state was so easily dismantled by Hitler’s National Socialists. What is more shocking, however, is the speed in which the Nazis turned a fragile democracy into one of history’s most draconian dictatorships. The Nazis demonstrated both brute force and political guile, as well as highly effective propaganda, in achieving their aims. There are many contradictions surrounding the transition from Weimar to Nazi Germany. The country had been home to some of the key figures of the Enlightenment Period, in arts, philosophy, music, and literature. Y ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Gallagher. This is our sixth book in the The Coming Series, and it has to do with helping Americans protect and build their life savings. In our previous books, we've discussed the weaknesses of the US banking system - including the newly instituted "bail in" program, hyperinflation, expatriation, and protecting oneself by investing in gold. This book is different. It spells out what global banks intend to do with our savings during the next banking crisis. Americans, including ourselves, feel that when we put our money in our local bank, the money we put in is ours. Not anymore! Once the teller takes your money and gives you the deposit slip, it becomes the bank's money. Chapter one explains the new rules that we all must live with as of November 2014. John and Monica Miller are Americans living in Auckland, New Zealand. Besides writing books to help Americans get their investments and savings out of harm's way, they write a weekly newsletter, provide free financial advice, and answer all emails. With regard to this book, the Millers say Americans must quickly learn the new banking rules and take appropriate measures to protect themselves - and fast! For listeners who need some assistance in getting some of your savings out of harm's way, please write us an email at john@banking-holiday.com or wallst101@hotmail.com. Monica and I will do our best to answer all your questions and concerns. Now, there is no need for you to travel to New Zealand or Australia to open a savings account, as we did. It can all be done easily and safely using the Internet. Presently, New Zealand's CDs are paying 3.6 percent interest (per year), and you only have to hold them for one month (as opposed to one to five years in America). As a further safety measure, your CDs are purchased within a "custodian account". ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Edmondson.
