This exclusive recording of Hard Times contains a unique introduction by Jeremy Paxman in which he takes us through Hard Times as his favourite Dickens title. To give it its full title, Hard Times - for These Times was Charles Dickens' 10th novel and the only one not to have any scenes set in London. It was first published in 1854 and depicts the struggles that were born as a result of the industrial revolution.  About the book  'Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life.' So says Thomas Gradgrind, a wealthy, utilitarian school board superintendent. Father to Tom and Louisa, he shapes the minds of all the young children, including his own, with the exception of only one: the circus-born Sissy Jupe.  As the novel progresses, we see the lives of these three young children unfold, shaped by the beliefs and values they've been taught by their respective fathers and educators. Growing into a beautiful yet miserable young lady, Louisa is wed off to an associate of her father's. Tom, dulled by his strict upbringing, becomes a dissipated, hedonistic gambler, and Sissy, their imaginative, creative and selfless guiding light, seeks to repair the damage done to her friends by years of utilitarian training.  About the author  With his father incarcerated, Charles Dickens had to abandon his studies at a young age and set to work in a factory so as to support himself. Despite his short-lived education, Dickens went on to write 15 novels and various articles, novellas and short stories. He lectured and led campaigns for children's rights and education and arguably became, unlike Josiah Bounderby, the ultimate self-made man.  About the narrator  Known for his versatility and for "making monsters and demons understood", Bertie Carvel has twice won the Olivier Award: for his performances as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda and Rupert Murdoch in ungekürzt. The key to finding success in life isn't about who you know, but how you serve.  Change the world, one person at a time. College freshmen are lectured about networking on their first day of class. Young professionals race to another boring party so they can be seen and shake hands with someone who might be able to help them - just like the business books and podcasts have instructed. Creatives are chronically obsessed with and depressed by the number of likes, views, and followers on their social media. Anyone embarking upon a new path or business venture has heard the key to success lies in networking - who you know and how they can get you ahead. But according to entertainment attorney Mark H. Maxwell, this is not only untrue, but potentially dangerous to those hoping to succeed. Networking Kills lays out what the Bible and Jesus say about true success. Weaving scripture with Maxwell's own stories from his professional career and pop culture illustrations (John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, Kim Kardashian, Johnny Cash), Networking Kills examines the need for cultural change concerning our pursuit and definition of "success" in every area of life and shows how serving is actually the key."Christ taught, 'If you want to be great, you must become a servant'," Maxwell says. "And, Martin Luther King, Jr., made it clear, 'Anybody can be great, because anybody can serve.' Even music business super-manager Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber) says, 'Don't live for yourself.... Live for others...that is where you will find true riches in life.' The heart of networking is rooted in selfishness, taking and using, while the great leaders teach us that true success comes through giving, loving others, and serving generously."In Networking Kills, Maxwell shows how:Networking kills creativityNetworking kills authentic relationshipsNetworking kills lifeNetworking kills love/ ungekürzt. Audie Award, 2019: Literary Fiction and ClassicsWinner of AudioFile Earphones Award 2018This Audible Exclusive performance of Bleak House features a unique introduction written and narrated by Miriam Margolyes. Recognised as one of Dickens' most accomplished titles, Bleak House has impressed critics and audiences alike since it was first published in 1852. The novel boasts one of the most intelligent and engaging plots in all of English literature and is sure to engage the listener's imagination as it transports us back in time to the seedy, grimy and hazardous streets of Victorian London. This release is part of the Dickens Collection, an exclusive series of unmissable performances available throughout 2018. About the audiobook: At the heart of Bleak House is the longstanding case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce - a damning portrayal of the 19th century legal system. Dickens shines a light on the impact that overdrawn court proceedings could have on the lives of those involved, specifically through two of his protagonists, Richard Carstone and his beloved Ada Clare. Dickens' unassuming heroine, Esther Summerson, along with the equally benevolent owner of Bleak House, John Jarndyce, attempts to guide the young lovers, Richard and Ada, to live their lives unaffected by the court proceedings. But with the introduction of some typically Dickensian characters such as Grandfather Smallweed and Mr Tulkinghorn, trouble soon ensues for all who cross their paths. About the author: Having experienced the incarceration of his father, Charles Dickens had to abandon his studies at a young age and set to work in a factory so as to support himself. Despite his short-lived education, Dickens went on to write 15 novels, various articles, novellas and short stories. Concentration and meditation by Swami Paramananda, author of "Soul's secret door", "the Way of peace and blessedness", ''Reincarnation and immortality". In this audiobook: concentration, meditation, aids to meditation, practical hints: fixity of purpose, Practice of Concentration, Methods of Meditation. Paramananda (1884–1940) was a swami and one of the early Indian teachers who went to the United States to spread the Vedanta philosophy and religion there. He was a mystic, a poet and an innovator in spiritual community living. Paramananda was sent to America in 1906 at the age of twenty-two to assist at the previously established New York Vedanta Society. He lived and taught there until 1909, when Paramananda established the Vedanta Centre of Boston. He lectured throughout the United States, Europe and Asia for thirty-four years, until his death in 1940. He founded four centres still thriving today, two in the United States and two in Calcutta, India. The American ashramas are in Cohasset, Massachusetts and La Crescenta, California. Like his teacher, Vivekananda, Paramananda believed in equality between men and women. About the audiobook: we all possess the faculty of concentration, but with the majority, it is instinctive and automatic, not conscious. Even among the animals, we see how a lion or tiger will gather his strength by a moment of absolute stillness before he springs upon his prey; that automatic, instinctive power of concentration is embedded in every living creature. But until we can gain conscious command over our mental and spiritual forces, we can never have complete concentration. When the scattered mind is gathered together it is like a bright searchlight, and by it man is able to investigate the latent powers which he possesses but of which he is not now wholly aware. As he grows more conscious of these hidden forces and learns to use them, he becomes more Language: English. Narrator: Paul Spera. Everyone recognises the famous physicist with the wild, white hair. But what sort of person was the young Albert Einstein, before he became universally acclaimed as the archetypal genius? And how did his genius unfold? In this brilliant new Kindle Single, scientist Robyn Arianrhod blends biography with popular science to tell the story of how young Albert developed a theory that - unknown to him at first - contained the seeds of his extraordinary equation E = mc2. Arianrhod, who wrote her PhD on Einstein’s general theory of relativity, makes the ideas behind the equation accessible to the lay reader and sets young Einstein’s exploration of these ideas against the backdrop of his first loves, his family and marriage and, above all, his childlike wonder at the nature of the universe. She introduces his heroes and scientific inspirations and the friends who believed in him when no one else did. In personalising Einstein she brings to life both the man and his science in a short, easy-to-read narrative. In showing how he discovered his famous equation and what it means, she draws a compelling portrait of this prodigious intellect whose unfathomable grasp of the building blocks of physics would change our world forever. Dr Robyn Arianrhod is the author of two critically acclaimed works of popular science and scientific history: Einstein’s Heroes: Imagining the World Through the Language of Mathematics and Seduced by Logic: Émilie du Châtelet, Mary Somerville and the Newtonian Revolution. Both were shortlisted for major book awards and are published in the USA. Einstein’s Heroes was translated into several languages. Robyn was awarded her PhD for research on Einstein’s general theory of relativity and has lectured in applied mathematics (including special relativity) for many years. She is currently an adjunct research fellow in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Monash University in Melbourne, wh ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Helen Noonan. The Gilded Age is the collaborative work of Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner that satirized the era that followed the Civil War. This period is often referred to as the “Gilded Age” because of this book. The corruption and greed that was typical of the time is exemplified through two fictional narratives: one, of the Hawkins, a poor family from Tennessee that tries to persuade the government to purchase their seventy-five thousand acres of unimproved land; and second, of Philip Sterling and Henry Brierly, two young upper-class men who seek their fortune in land as well. This book is widely considered one of the hundred greatest books of all time and is here to attract a whole new generation of readers, for the themes of this classic work are still relevant to our nation today. MARK TWAIN (1835–1910) was born Samuel L. Clemens in the town of Florida, Missouri. One of the most popular and influential authors our nation has ever produced, his keen wit and incisive satire earned him praise from both critics and peers. He has been called not only the greatest humorist of his age but the father of American literature. CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829–1900), an American essayist and novelist, was born of Puritan ancestry. He traveled widely, lectured frequently, and was actively interested in prison reform, city park supervision, and other movements for the public good. He was the first president of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and, at the time of his death, was president of the American Social Science Association. He first attracted attention by the reflective sketches entitled My Summer in a Garden, popular for their abounding and refined humor and mellow personal charm, wholesome love of outdoor things, comments on life and affairs, and delicately finished style, qualities that suggest the work of Washington Irving. ungekürzt. The best critic of popular culture in America considers the attraction of the Doors, which has endured despite the band’s short life, sampling the lasting songs and legendary performances that made Jim Morrison and his band rock ’n’ roll legends. A fan from the moment the Doors’ first album took over KMPX, the revolutionary FM rock ’n’ roll station in San Francisco, Greil Marcus saw the band many times at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium and the Avalon Ballroom in 1967. Five years later it was all over. Forty years after singer Jim Morrison was found dead in Paris and the group disbanded, one could drive from here to there, changing from one FM pop station to another, and be all but guaranteed to hear two, three, four of the Doors’ songs in an hour - every hour. Whatever the demands in the music, they remained unsatisfied, in the largest sense unfinished, and absolutely alive. There have been many books on the Doors. This is the first to bypass their myth, their mystique, and the death cult of both Jim Morrison - and the era he was made to personify - and focus solely on the music. All these years later, it is a new story. Griel Marcus is the author of Bob Dylan by Greil Marcus, When That Rough God Goes Riding, The Shape of Things to Come, Mystery Train, Dead Elvis, In the Fascist Bathroom, Double Trouble, Like a Rolling Stone, and The Old, Weird America. With Werner Sollors he is the editor of A New Literary History of America. Since 2000 he has taught at Princeton and Berkeley, in Minnesota, and at the New School in New York. His column Real Life Rock Top 10 appears regularly in the Believer. He has lectured at University of California, Berkeley, the Whitney Museum of Art, and Princeton University. There is a lot of interest in today’s culture about the idea of Persona and the psychological mapping of one’s inner world. In fact, the interest is so strong that the superstar Korean Pop band, BTS, has taken Dr. Murray Stein’s concepts and woven them into the title and lyrics of their latest album, Map of the Soul: Persona. What is our persona and how does it affect our life’s journey? What masks do we wear as we engage those around us? Our persona is ultimately how we relate to the world. Combined with our ego, shadow, anima, and other intra-psychic elements it creates an internal map of the soul. T.S. Eliot, one of the most famous English poets of the 20th Century, wrote that every cat has three names: the name that everybody knows, the name that only the cat’s intimate friends and family know, and the name that only the cat knows. As humans, we also have three names: the name that everybody knows, which is the public persona; the name of that only your close friends and family know, which is your private persona; and the name that only you know, which refers to your deepest self. Many people know the first name, and some people know the second. Do you know your secret name, your individual, singular, unique name? This is a name that was given to you before you were named by your family and by your society. This name is the one that you should never lose or forget. Would you try listening to this book today to see world history the way I do in a way that liberates me from the frustrating limitations I learned in school and places me in a world with a deep sense of where I come from and what my purpose today is? My total dissatisfaction with the mainstream version of history many of us are given started in anthropology class when I was a student in college. As the professor told us how there was a "missing link" that no one had found which connected apes to us, I saw what appeared to be an obvious lie on the degree of "the world is still flat". That just made no logical sense. The more the professor lectured, the more I wanted to find a source with better information. I was looking for a source that could see beyond the world being flat. Years later I found this in the shows on the history channel. My favorite is Ancient Aliens with the idea being that aliens have been visiting earth for a long time and they never stopped. In fact, according to our DNA, we very likely are not from this planet at all. We are the aliens. The best evidence I have seen of this is what happens with our body's circadian rhythm in space. Our circadian rhythm on earth is synced up with a 24 hour earth day where our bodily functions such as sleep become aligned with the hours in each day available to us on this planet. What happens in space? Human bodies in space go out of sync with an earth day circadian rhythm and they go in sync with a 24 hour and 40 minute day. This small fact might seem insignificant until you learn that a day on Mars is the exact same length. Our place in the universe has been lost for a long time and we are just getting ready to get it back! Would you join me in discovering this for yourself today by listening to this book? ungekürzt.
