Catturato e coinvolto, l'amico, insieme alla storia di H, si scopre a raccontare anche le proprie vicende interiori, dal problematico ma intrigante rapporto con la moglie Claudia alla difficile e intensa scoperta della figlia Lucia, dando vita a una sorta di ininterrotta riflessione filosofica ed esistenziale materiata di dubbi, curiosità, passioni non sopite. Ne nasce una sorta di narrazione a due voci in cui sembrano echeggiare le note del Totentanz di Liszt. Perché il senso della morte percorre l'intero romanzo.
