Elizabeth Loftus's 1979 work, Eyewitness Testimony, explains why people sometimes remember events inaccurately, and how this simple fact has a profound impact on the criminal justice system. Eyewitness accounts, which are often used in criminal trials, can be very persuasive to both judges and juries. Yet these accounts are based on memories that are not always reliable, meaning that suspects may be misidentified or wrongfully convicted. Loftus recommends particular methods for gathering testimony that are less likely to distort memory, and suggests that experts on memory should be able to testify in court. Eyewitness Testimony paved the way for important reforms to the American criminal justice system, inspired cognitive scientists to continue researching how memory works, and helped to establish the new academic field of psychology and law. The book made Loftus a well-respected authority on the problems of eyewitness testimony, and it is her most significant work to date. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com. Although it is little known in this country, The Belly of Paris is considered one of Émile Zola’s best novels. Set in the newly built food markets of Paris, it is a story of wealth and poverty set against a sumptuous banquet of food and commerce. Having just escaped from prison after being wrongfully accused, young Florent arrives at Paris’ food market, Les Halles, half starved, surrounded by all he can’t have, and indignant at his world, which he now knows to be unjust. He finds that the city’s working classes have been displaced to make way for bigger streets and bourgeois living quarters, so he settles in with his brother’s family. Gradually, he takes up with the local socialists, who are more at home in bars than on the revolutionary streets. Slowly, the ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor drags the city to the breaking point. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Frederick Davidson. Arrested. Wrongfully accused. Sentenced to 10 years. But the steel bars release me early. After serving half of my time for a crime I didn’t commit, they grant me parole - with a very short leash. My second chance at freedom begins now, and I won’t waste it. I should’ve been paying more attention.Ambushed. Captured. Stranded. When I wake in the depths of a snowy forest, all seems lost. I’ve been left alone in the wilderness with zero means of escape. Until someone rouses beside me.I recognize Blakely Cross instantly, yet she’s barely more than a stranger. Now she’s stuck with me in the worst possible place, as collateral damage.Blakely blames me, and rightfully so. This entire situation is my fault. Our destinies are inadvertently twisted together by forces far larger than us. Whether she hates me or not, we need each other to stay alive.Cope. Adapt. Persevere. They tossed us out to be buried, but underestimated our determination. The bond we’re building will overcome the harshest conditions. And we’re not willing to surrender.  ungekürzt. The creator of Perry Mason's Edgar Award - winning account of miscarriages of justice, wrongful convictions, legal battles, and landmark reversals. In 1945, Erle Stanley Gardner, noted attorney and author of the popular Perry Mason mysteries, was contacted by an overwhelmed California public defender who believed his doomed client was innocent. William Marvin Lindley had been convicted of the rape and murder of a young girl along the banks of the Yuba River, and was awaiting execution at San Quentin. After reviewing the case, Gardner agreed to help - it seemed the fate of the "Red-Headed Killer" hinged on the testimony of a colorblind witness. Gardner's intervention sparked the Court of Last Resort. The Innocence Project of its day, this ambitious and ultimately successful undertaking was devoted to investigating, reviewing, and reversing wrongful convictions owing to poor legal representation, prosecutorial abuses, biased police activity, bench corruption, unreliable witnesses, and careless forensic-evidence testimony. The crimes: rape, murder, kidnapping, and manslaughter. The prisoners: underprivileged and vulnerable men wrongly convicted and condemned to life sentences or death row with only one hope - the devotion of Erle Stanley Gardner and the Court of Last Resort. Featuring Gardner's most damning cases of injustice from across the country, The Court of Last Resort won the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime. Originating as a monthly column in Argosy magazine, it was produced as a dramatized court TV show for NBC. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mel Foster.
