In The Statesman as Thinker, Daniel J. Mahoney provides thoughtful and elegant portraits of statesmen who struggled to preserve freedom during times of crisis: Cicero using all the powers of rhetoric to preserve republican liberty in Rome against Caesar's encroaching autocracy; Burke defending ordered liberty against Jacobin tyranny in revolutionary France; Tocqueville defending liberty and human dignity against blind reaction, democratic impatience, and revolutionary fanaticism; Lincoln preserving the American republic and putting an end to chattel slavery; Churchill defending liberty and law and opposing Nazi and Communist despotism; de Gaulle defending the honor of France during World War II; and Havel fighting Communism before 1989 and then leading the Czech Republic with dignity and grace. Mahoney makes sense of the mixture of magnanimity and moderation that defines the statesman as thinker at his or her best. That admirable mixture of greatness, courage, and moderation owes much to classical and Christian wisdom and to the noble desire to protect the inheritance of civilization against rapacious and destructive despotic regimes and ideologies.

Something is lurking under the lake... Struggling to come to terms with the sudden death of his sister, Owen Saddler becomes obsessed with the lake that claimed her life. The remains of a forgotten town rest at the bottom of that dark body of water - along with a host of buried secrets. Thirty years earlier, the town of Peace Falls had been flooded to build a hydroelectric dam, and its ruins remain below the surface of Chapel Lake. The strange disappearance of the town pastor, along with many of the parishioners, still haunts the citizens of Chapel Lake. But does the church haunt the lake itself? Is Owen really seeing ghosts...or has he descended into the depths of madness? Salvage is the debut horror novel of author Duncan Ralston. A disturbing story of depression, religious fanaticism, and the afterlife, Salvage seeks to illuminate the darkness within us all. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Daniel G. Curtis. In the 1960s, British historian Jonathan Riley-Smith first began studying the knightly orders of the Middle Ages that formed after the First Crusade. By the late 1970s, he had begun writing books from a "revisionist" point of view, challenging the common belief that the Crusades were motivated by fanaticism, and were designed to plunder the Holy Lands. To an extent, Riley-Smith's 1986 book The First Crusade and the Idea of Crusading overturned this previously held view. Riley-Smith came to his conclusions after studying handwritten documents held in churches across Western Europe, in which Crusaders explained their personal reasons for heading out on the "holy war." He then pioneered the use of computer spreadsheets to cross-reference data on individual Crusaders and their families, which allowed him to paint a much more complete picture than had been seen previously. He came to the conclusion that most Crusaders were actually motivated by spiritual devotion and a genuine desire to atone for past sins. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com. From New York Times best-selling author and former Green Beret Bob Mayer: What if the Japanese had developed an atomic bomb at the end of World War II? And one was still around? It was born decades ago in war. It has been launched from the heart of foreign power. And it has been primed by betrayal and fanaticism. While America sleeps, while homegrown terrorists are unwittingly manipulated by an unknown master, a hyper-weapon approaches San Francisco Bay. And only one man has any chance of stopping it. Trained to kill with any weapon - from his hands to a silenced pistol - the man called Lake has the green light to penetrate domestic militia cells and make his own calls, anywhere, any time. But when Lake intercepts an act of terror on the Golden Gate Bridge, he ignites an incredible hunt, a race against time, betrayal, and an enemy more dangerous than Lake or his handlers could guess. ungekürzt. Midsummer is usually fun time in Boston. Whether it's going to a baseball game, walking around the waterfront, or touring the historic places, visitors and residents alike, have a great time with their lives. Unfortunately, this particular summer, someone with a criminal view of life had a different goal in mind. A serial killer, who had a fanatic and clever idea about choosing victims on a random basis and selecting the murder dates based on meticulous religious fanaticism learned since childhood, broke into the city joyfulness with his mad methods of destruction. It would take a priest and two dedicated police officers to detect the bizarre murders and convince an incredulous police department that the serial killer and his killings existed in the first place. It would take additional investigation and ingenuity to learn how the killer carried out the murders before authorities launched an urgent manhunt without precedent trying to catch and stop him before he could kill again. This is the story. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dave Cohen. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/022117/bk_acx0_022117_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Now that their latest battle is over, the religious residents of Blister Creek are dealing with their losses and trying to heal - physically and spiritually. Their leader, Jacob Christianson, now feels the full burden of the responsibility and finds himself at a crossroads: keep the believers isolated, or see what lies beyond Blister Creek's borders. In a world still enmeshed in war, famine, and destruction, wool blankets and powdered milk are the new currency. Fortunately, the devout community has made all the necessary preparations to ensure their own survival. But dangerous new challenges rise around Blister Creek: Squatters at the reservoir seek to take the residents' rations, a rogue government operative is trying to limit access to supplies, and a wave of fanaticism sweeping through the community is threatening to divide the followers. In the final gripping installment of the Righteous series, Jacob must decide the future of his flock - and just how much he is willing to sacrifice. ungekürzt. Language: English. Within a few months we'd witnessed bickering, desertion, subterfuge and rivalry. I was rapidly coming to the conclusion that only a miracle could save us now. Two men with a passion for vinyl create a society for the appreciation of records. Their aim is simple: to elevate the art of listening by doing so in forensic detail. The society enjoys moderate success in the back room of their local pub, The Half Moon, with other enthusiasts drawn to the initial promise of the weekly gathering. However, as the club gains popularity, its founder's uncompromising dogma results in a schism within the movement, and soon a counter group forms. Then the arrival of a young woman called Alice further fractures the unity of the vulnerable society. As rifts are forged and gulfs widen, Magnus Mills examines the surreal nature of ordinary lives. The master of the comic deadpan returns for his ninth novel, a spectacularly disingenuous exploration of power, fanaticism and really, really good records. ungekürzt. Language: English.
