Alexander Hamilton: A Captivating Guide to an American Founding Father Who Wrote the Majority of the Federalist Papers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 212min
If you want to discover the captivating life of Alexander Hamilton, then pay attention.... Alexander Hamilton, unlike many of the other founding fathers of the United States, was born outside of wedlock and was an orphan at the age of 13 after his mother died. He was thrown into the world, depending on the charity of friends and neighbors. That perhaps is one of the reasons why Alexander Hamilton was fiscally sensitive and always anxious about funding and finance, not only for himself but for the new nation of the United States, where he emigrated when he was in his late teens. It is no wonder then that he became the first secretary of the treasury of the United States and that he even saved banks from financial collapse. Hamilton had a brilliant mind. Although the law was his calling, he was blessed with charisma that could persuade even the stoniest of hearts. As a prolific writer, he never shied from presenting his legal (and personal) opinions regarding the political issues of the day. In Alexander Hamilton: A Captivating Guide to an American Founding Father Who Wrote the Majority of the Federalist Papers, you will discover topics such as:From Nevis to BostonFrom pen to swordOnset of Hamilton’s political careerEconomy and the first national bankThe time the troubles startEmpowerment of political partiesThe bitterly fought electionsBottom of the curveAnd much, much more!So if you want to learn more about Alexander Hamilton, buy this book today! ungekürzt. The Scarlet Letter , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 413min
One of the most important novels in classic literature, Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter tackles the subject of adultery, with the notorious Hester Prynne at the forefront of the scandal in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In the beginning of the novel, Hester is serving time in prison for having a child out of wedlock and is forced to wear a scarlet A on her clothing at all times, so she cannot run from her sin no matter where she goes. Her husband has been away for around two years, and she refuses to name the father of her daughter, Pearl. The father is actually Reverend Dimmesdale, a timid man who keeps his secret from the community. Hester's husband returns to the colony, where he finds out what has happened and makes it his personal goal to torment the father of Pearl. He discovers that it is Dimmesdale and tries to intimidate him. The pressure becomes too much for Dimmesdale, and after seven years of torture the reverend eventually admits what he has done and dies before a crowd of people. Not long after, Hester's husband also passes away, leaving Hester and her daughter enough money to escape the colony and finally have some peace. At the end, however, Hester decides to come back to the colony, and when she passes away, she is buried next to the reverend, with whom she had been in love. ungekürzt. Language: English. Ida: The Last Lupino: A One-Woman Play in Two Acts: The Hollywood Legends , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 75min
Ida Lupino was a trail-blazer. Not only was she one of the most vibrant Hollywood actresses of the 1940s and 1950s, starring in such film classics as They Drive by Night, High Sierra, The Sea Wolf, Ladies in Retirement, Road House, Lust for Gold, and The Big Knife, but she was also only the second woman to become a member of the Director's Guild. As an independent writer-producer-director, her bold films dealt with subjects that the major Hollywood studios were afraid to tackle: out-of-wedlock mothers, polio, and rape. Her 1953 directorial effort, The Hitch-Hiker, is a benchmark of the film noir genre.Ida's personal life was not easy. The daughter of a British theatrical family that stretched back generations, she moved to Hollywood while still in her teens, languishing in mediocre films until she garnered the role of a mad woman of the streets in director William Wellman's The Light That Failed. She was also married three times: to actor Louis Hayward, producer Collier Young, and to actor Howard Duff, the longest and certainly the stormiest union of them all. Michael B. Druxman's one-woman play, Ida: The Last Lupino, joins Ida in 1983 when she is living alone in her decaying Brentwood home as a virtual hermit, lamenting the break-up of her marriage with Duff. Ida: The Last Lupino is a vivid, often witty, portrait of a woman who conquered a man's world. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kathleen Godwin. Mary Shelley: A Very Short Introduction (eBook, ePUB)
Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring In 1816, when eighteen-year old Mary Godwin began writing Frankenstein, the idea that a woman could dream up such a tale was as far-fetched as raising a being from the dead. But Mary wasn't just any woman. The daughter of two notorious radicals, Mary had become an outcast from English society when she was only sixteen. A lifelong advocate for the rights of women, she refused to be governed by social conventions, running away with a married man, having children out of wedlock, and authoring books, stories, and essays that broke literary conventions. This Very Short Introduction explores the context, background, and important themes contained in Shelley's most famous novel, Frankenstein, as well as demonstrating the importance of her work after Frankenstein. Over the course of her long career, Shelley developed a distinctive voice, and a political and philosophical stance. Exploring key themes throughout Shelley's work, Charlotte Gordon shows how she devoted herself to the propositions her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, outlined in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: that women are equal to men; that all people deserve the same rights; that human reason and the capacity for love can reform the world; and that every person is entitled to justice and freedom. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.- Shop: buecher

Miracles Still Happen...Trust Me: Giving Up Is Not an Option , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 152min
Miracles Still Happen...Trust Me is about a young African American woman from a rural country town of Northwest Louisiana (Coushatta) who had some unfortunate tragedies throughout life that began with being molested by two uncles. This molestation set the tone for keeping secrets throughout her life's journey. With a hidden teenage pregnancy, suicide attempt, homelessness, a failed abusive marriage, surviving cancer, and a neurological disorder which resulted in a total body paralysis, it is only through continued prayer and strong faith in God's divine promises that she overcomes the many challenges from childhood through her adult years.Throughout her life, she experiences trials, tragedies, and triumphs. However, it is not until she is challenged with a total body paralysis and has to depend on her 13-year-old son as her caretaker that her faith is tested greater than ever before, and she regains the most compelling spiritual, mental, and emotional connection with God.Miracles Still Happen...Trust Me shows how God chose a broken, hurt country girl who mothered a child out of wedlock and protected her from death numerous times to witness and share her life's miracles. These same miracles would be used to encourage every soul to pray, to build a relationship with God, and to never give up or let anyone's opinion define who you are or determine who you can become. Each of us is a unique miracle from God. Each time life begins, a miracle happens. Every walk of life is designed to build and mold you into the miracle that you are. If only we would have faith, learn to listen, obey, and trust God's direction, we could be assured that miracles still happen. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mary LaShonda Webber.
