The Cumans and Magyars: The History and Legacy of the Steppe Nomads Who Raided Europe Throughout the Late Middle Ages , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 143min
Of all the steppe peoples in the medieval period, perhaps none were more important to European history than the Magyars. Like the Huns and Avars before them and the Cumans and Mongols after them, the Magyars burst into Europe as a destructive, unstoppable horde, taking whatever they wanted and leaving a steady stream of misery in their wake. They used much of the same tactics as the other steppe peoples and lived a similar, nomadic lifestyle. The Magyars also had many early cultural affinities with other steppe peoples, following a similar religion and ideas of kingship and nobility, among other things. That said, as similar as the Magyars may have been to other steppe nomads before and after them, they were noticeably different in one way: The Magyars settled down and became a part of Europe and Western Civilization in the Middle Ages. The Magyars exploded onto the European cultural scene in the late ninth century as foreign marauders, but they made alliances with many important kingdoms in less than a century and established their own dynasty in the area, roughly equivalent to the modern nation-state of Hungary. After establishing themselves as a legitimate dynasty among their European peers, the Magyars formed a sort of cultural bridge between the Roman Catholic kingdoms of Western Europe and the Orthodox Christian kingdoms of Eastern Europe. Ultimately, the Magyars chose the Roman Catholic Church, thereby becoming a part of the West and tying their fate to it for the remainder of the Middle Ages. ungekürzt. Language: English. Horsemen from the Steppe: Nothing but Glory: The Right Form of War Series, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 672min
The Eurasian steppes have been described as “a great far-reaching solitude”, but it has been the home of untold numbers of people for millennia. From the forested margins of Poland to the frozen deserts of Mongolia, from the scorching sands of Persia to the numbing wastes of Siberia, the horsemen of the steppes periodically overrode Europe for 900 years, conquered China, and spread their culture to India and the Middle East. These nomads formed themselves into moving empires, which for a few years dominated the surrounding trembling nations, and then vanished and melted away, seemingly leaving little trace of their existence other than a record of destruction. Such were the monarchies of the Huns, Tartars, and Avars; the Scythians, Alans, and Sarmatians; and the Seljuks, Parthians, and Mongols. The horsemen of the steppes are best known for three characteristics. Their lives centered on their horses; they moved endlessly with their herds and families; and they were fierce and merciless warriors who used their mobility and powerful bows and arrows to threaten the so-called civilized world. The horsemen of the steppes are best known for three characteristics. Their lives centered on their horses; they moved endlessly with their herds and families; and they were fierce and merciless warriors who used their mobility and powerful bows and arrows to threaten the so-called civilized world. Until recently, the technological and cultural advances made by these nomadic peoples have been ignored, misrepresented, or even denigrated. In fact, other than glory, they left little or nothing of their material culture behind them. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robert L. Stone , Jr.. In God's Path: The Arab Conquests and the Creation of an Islamic Empire , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 594min
In just over a hundred years - from the death of Muhammad in 632 to the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate in 750 - the followers of the Prophet swept across the whole of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. Their armies threatened states as far flung as the Franks in Western Europe and the Tang Empire in China. The conquered territory was larger than the Roman Empire at its greatest expansion, and it was claimed for the Arabs in roughly half the time. How this collection of Arabian tribes was able to engulf so many empires, states, and armies in such a short period has perplexed historians for centuries. Most accounts of the Arab invasions have been based almost solely on the early Muslim sources, which were composed centuries later to illustrate the divinely chosen status of the Arabs. Robert Hoyland's groundbreaking new history assimilates not only the rich biographical information of the early Muslim sources but also the many non-Arabic sources, contemporaneous or near-contemporaneous with the conquests. In God's Path begins with a broad picture of the Late Antique world prior to the Prophet's arrival, a world dominated by two superpowers: Byzantium and Sasanian Persia. In between these empires, emerged a distinct Arabian identity, which helped forge the inhabitants of western Arabia into a formidable fighting force. The Arabs are the principal actors in this drama yet, as Hoyland shows, the peoples along the edges of Byzantium and Persia - the Khazars, Bulgars, Avars, and Turks - all played critical roles in the remaking of the old world order. The new faith propagated by Muhammad and his successors made it possible for many of the conquered peoples to join the Arabs in creating the first Islamic Empire. Well-paced, comprehensive, and eminently readable, In God's Path presents a sweeping narrative of a transformational period in world history.
