New Date Suggested for Homo Naledi , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 6min
Homo naledi, currently the most mysterious fossil species in the human genus, may be considerably younger than previously thought, a new investigation suggests. Evolutionary trees of ancient hominids statistically reconstructed from skull and tooth measurements indicate that H. naledi lived around 912,000 years ago, say paleoanthropologist Mana Dembo of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada, and her colleagues. That’s a provisional estimate, since researchers have yet to date either H. naledi’s bones or the sediment in which some of its remains were excavated."New Date Suggested for Homo Naledi" is from the August 6, 2016 issue of Science News. ungekürzt. Almost Human: The Astonishing Tale of Homo Naledi and the Discovery That Changed Our Human Story , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 394min
A story of defiance and determination by a controversial scientist, this is Lee Berger's own take on finding Homo naledi, an all-new species on the human family tree and one of the greatest discoveries of the 21st century. In 2013, Lee Berger, a National Geographic explorer-in-residence, heard of a cache of bones in a hard-to-reach underground cave in South Africa. He put out a call around the world for petite collaborators - men and women small and adventurous enough to be able to squeeze through eight-inch tunnels to reach a sunless cave forty feet underground. With this team, Berger made the discovery of a lifetime: hundreds of prehistoric bones, including entire skeletons of at least 15 individuals, all perhaps two million years old. Their features combined those of known prehominids like Lucy, the famous Australopithecus, with those more human than anything ever before seen in prehistoric remains. Berger's team had discovered an all new species, and they called it Homo naledi. The cave quickly proved to be the richest prehominid site ever discovered, full of implications that shake the very foundation of how we define what makes us human. Did this species come before, during, or after the emergence of Homo sapiens on our evolutionary tree? How did the cave come to contain nothing but the remains of these individuals? Did they bury their dead? If so, they must have had a level of self-knowledge, including an awareness of death. And yet those are the very characteristics used to define what makes us human. Did an equally advanced species inhabit Earth with us, or before us? Berger does not hesitate to address all these questions. Some colleagues question Berger's interpretation of this and other finds. Here, this charismatic and visionary paleontologist counters their arguments and tells his personal story: a rich narrative about science, exploration, and what it means to be human. ungekürzt. A Princess in Theory , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 687min
Between grad school and multiple jobs, Naledi Smith doesn't have time for fairy tales . . . or the patience for constant emails claiming she's betrothed to an African prince. Sure. Right. Delete! As a former foster kid, she's learned that the only things she can depend on are herself and the scientific method, and a silly email won't convince her otherwise. Prince Thabiso is the sole heir to the throne of Thesolo, shouldering the hopes of his parents and his people. At the top of their list? His marriage. Ever dutiful, he tracks down his missing betrothed. When Naledi mistakes the prince for a pauper, Thabiso can't resist the chance to experience life - and love - without the burden of his crown. The chemistry between them is instant and irresistible, and their flirty friendship quickly evolves into passionate nights. But when the truth is revealed, can a princess in theory become a princess ever after? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Karen Chilton. Vacationland , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 732min
On a lake in northernmost Minnesota, you might find Naledi Lodge - only two cabins still standing, its pathways now trodden mostly by memories. And there you might meet Meg, or the ghost of the girl she was, growing up under her grandfather’s care in a world apart and a lifetime ago. Now an artist, Meg paints images "reflected across the mirrors of memory and water", much as the linked stories of Vacationland cast shimmering spells across distance and time. Those whose paths have crossed at Naledi inhabit Vacationland: a man from nearby Hatchet Inlet who knew Meg back when, a Sarajevo refugee sponsored by two parishes who can’t afford "their own refugee", aged sisters traveling to fulfill a fateful pact once made at the resort, a philandering ad man, a lonely Ojibwe stonemason, and a haiku-spouting girl rescued from a bog. Sarah Stonich, whose work has been described as "unexpected and moving" by the Chicago Tribune and "a well-paced feast" by the Los Angeles Times, weaves these tales of love and loss, heartbreak and redemption into a rich novel of interconnected and disjointed lives. Vacationland is a moving portrait of a place - at once timeless and of the moment, composed of conflicting dreams and shared experience - and of the woman bound to it by legacy, and sometimes longing, but not necessarily by choice. ungekürzt. To the Best of Our Knowledge: The First People (English), Hörbuch, Digital, 51min
It will go down as one of the most amazing archeological discoveries in history. Homo naledi - a new species of human-like fossils found in South Africa - is already rewriting the story of human evolution. These 15 skeletons are the largest cache of pre-human bones ever found. But so far, scientists don't know how old they are, or why they were placed in this burial site. Grad student Alia Gurtov describes the perilous crawl into the cave, which narrows to 7 inches at one point, in order to retrieve the fossils. And paleoanthropologist John Hawks explains why the discovery overturns decades of assumptions about our ancestry. What's it like to look at the 30,000-year old paintings in Chauvet Cave? "You're just awe-struck", says renowned filmmaker Werner Herzog, who finds direct connections between these ancient paintings and modern art. The Chauvet paintings also inspired Kim Stanley Robinson to write his novel Shaman, which is set in the paleolithic era when humans co-existed with Neandertals. Michelle Paver is another novelist who writes about the Stone Age. Her big question: What kinds of stories were told by the greatest storytellers? In our last segment, we shift gears and reflect on 9/11 and the battles that followed with one of the world's great war photographers. James Nachtwey nearly died taking photos at Ground Zero as the World Trade Center collapsed, and he's waded into war zones around the world. [Broadcast Date: September 16, 2015] Language: English.
