GEISHA - "YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW" Geisha emerged from the early '80s Melbourne Australia glam-rock scene with vital points of difference. They had an art-rock sensibility, a sense of visuals and image from leader Chris Doheny's love for story-telling, film-making, Bauhaus-style architecture, and an interest in alternate lifestyles including the books of Satanist Aleister Crowley. From their very first show, at the Chelsea Hotel in April 1983, they bonded with their audience. "You lot are amazing, can we take you home with us?" Doheny quipped. He'd later recall, "I'd been playing around the traps since I was 17. This was the first time that I felt a spark, and the audience felt it too." Unlike many of the acts of the time, Geisha could actually play. Among the dozen or so players who passed through the ranks were Chris Tabone who later joined The Badloves, guitarist Rob Dean from British band Japan, keyboardist Laurence Maddy who has since won film awards for his soundtracks, and guitarist Ken Sheppard who is a record producer and runs a studio on the Gold Coast. The 2009 version of the band includes Geisha, guitarist Joe Matera and drummer Tom Hosie who'd played in an earlier incarnation. Geisha notched up eight Top 10 hits between 1985 and 1987 and two albums Geisha and Midnight To Dawn, on EMI Music. Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow collects 12 of the best tracks, which are both intimate and confessional while being invigorating and anthemic. "Fool's Way" is about the time Doheny tried to kill himself following a break up with a long-time love. When he left hospital the next day, "I felt the most serene I had ever felt." "Rainy Day" told of the secret relationship he had with the girl who became his first wife, as she was still with someone else at the time. The live favourite "Girl Like You" heralded Geisha's jingle-jangle period, with 12-string Rickenbacker and National Steel guitars. Their Australian #1 hit "Kabuki" might not have made them overnight stars in Japan. But the head of Manhattan Records in America loved the song, flew out to Sydney to catch one of their shows, and signed them up that night for an American deal. Unfortunately, due to a leadership change at EMI Music Australia, the US label cooled off. Included on Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow are two singles from 2009 through Diamond Dog Records - "Birthday" (accompanied by Liam Firmager's acid-soaked video with a number of mysterious references which created a lot of interest on the internet) and "Mystery Writer". Both were made with US producer Tom Werman (Cheap Trick, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister) and reflect the hard rock aggression of guitarist Joe Matera, who'd been a fan of the early lineups. "It took me quite awhile to get over the surrealism of standing onstage in Geisha, playing alongside Chris Doheny," Matera admits. Rounding off Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow are two covers that reflect the many dimensions of Geisha. They pay homage to the conspiratorially intricate harmonies of The Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" and the melodic gustiness of The Small Faces' "Tin Soldier" which fires a fuse from the first note to the last. The current Geisha lineup is working on new material, with interest from U.S. and European tour promoters. Doheny toured the USA in late 2007. Chris Doheny has written songs for global acts as Terri Nunn of Berlin and Andrew Ridgeley of Wham! While Joe Matera's byline appears in numerous music magazines around the world. Their work with Geisha has gained them international celebrity fans. "Geisha rock! I have heard some of their music and thought it was great," said Elliot Easton from The Cars. "Geisha play proper rock with attitude," according to Steve Harley of "Come Up And See Me" fame. "It's been a long time, too long, since a really international hit band came out of Oz. Geisha could be the answer." - CHRISTIE ELIEZER, Pollstar Magazine, USA.
