Untangling with Value Stream Mapping (eBook, PDF)
The standard belief in books about Lean initiatives and value stream mapping (VSM) is that VSM works well on transactional processes (which are primarily linear processes where handoffs are well defined and the outcome is known) and it is useful for repetitive projects or products. This book counters these statements by clearly demonstrating how a VSM exercise can be successfully performed in complex, multifunctional environments involving nonrepetitive work, such as aircraft new product development, custom engineering, software development and project management. The methodology described in this book is the result of more than ten years of refinement and is based on practice while working with multidisciplinary teams and helping them achieve their goals. This is a novel approach to capturing the information flow in a VSM by recognizing it as the place where most of the issues are generated, especially for the previously mentioned environments and the fact that classical mapping methodologies (including classical VSM) do not capture it well. The VSM methodology that the author developed goes to the essence of a VSM (activities flow, information flow, timeline), uses conventional VSM icons and some custom information flow icons and helps the following: Quantifying waste (VSM literature gap) Making disconnects visible (VSM literature gap) Making behavioral and cultural patterns visible (VSM literature gap) If the steps are followed thoroughly, then lead time reductions ranging from 60% to 88% are achieved, along with increased availability of resources, more output with the same resources, projects delivered on time and, most importantly, colleagues embracing the Lean mindset, which greatly contributes to maintaining the gains. Essentially, this book helps readers perform a VSM in environments where multiple stakeholders interact with each other to deliver a product or a service with unclear aspects, such as what the product/service is, how all involved can contribute to the product or service transformation and how the interactions between them occur. For example, the products/services targeted in this book include test results, analysis results, a custom design, a process, a methodology, an engineering change, integrated enterprise software and engineering drawings. Concurrently, this book helps readers map behavioral patterns, such as micromanagement, and company culture aspects, such as excessive governance and "decisions by committee."- Shop: buecher

Beginning to See the Light
How does one, in reality 'see the light?' For many it is a spiritual element, while others have an epiphany or revelation about an aspect of life or relationships with something they may suddenly discover, have known all along and finally accept, or experience an event that changes them forever. In the case of Metro-Detroit's up-and-coming jazz singer Jesse Palter, she is seeing the light while concurrently being surrounded by it. As the past few years of her young life have progressed, she is continually spreading the aura of her musical being to listeners in local night clubs, concert halls and festival performances. Her rising star has been meteoric, as anybody can quickly recognize her clear, natural talent for transforming a well worn song into one all her own, and enchanting listeners in ways few vocalists can. Recently Palter has been duly recognized for her effort, winning the prestigious Detroit Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocalist. It's no small feat in a marketplace dotted with great singers and role models such as Bettye LaVette, Ursula Walker and of course the all time Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Jesse Palter is a product of the well respected West Bloomfield school district in Oakland County, north of Detroit. Singing publicly since age 5 and playing piano at 6, she took up trumpet and oboe, instruments with completely different timbres & techniques, and a stark indication of her versatility. Her music studies at Abbott Middle School, West Bloomfield High School, and the University Of Michigan served as a prelude to becoming a jazz singer that has all the background and is gaining experience to reach lofty flights of swinging improvisational fancy. In fact, Jesse held a unique place at U-Michigan in that she was accepted as a vocal student in their classical and jazz programs devoted solely to instrumentalists. There she toiled under the tutelage of ex-Count Basie trombonist Dennis Wilson, and veteran Detroit saxophonist/bandleader Donald Walden. This debut CD demonstrates Jesse Palter's flexible, poignant, attractive vocal instrument, complemented by unique arrangements that surround that sweetest of sounds. What immediately grabs you though is that she challenges herself by using charts that are a departure from the norm. Check out the title track, using mixed meters, mostly in 7, or the 5/4 'Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart.' She absolutely tears up 'There Will Never Be Another You' starting in a quick waltz, moving to hard bop, and back again. Jesse scats with the verve and vigor of a vocalist wise beyond her years on several of these selections. She can sing succinct ballads as 'It's Not Easy Bein' Green' and 'One For My Baby' with ease and equal aplomb as her loping, soulful take on The Turtles pop tune 'Happy Together,' the funky original 'Lovesick,' or a delicate version of 'Taking A Chance On Love.' She'll break your tears into thin, misty dewdrops on another original 'Change Of Heart' and the classic 'Some Other Time.' Her yeoman peers/accompanists need to be mentioned in spades. Pianist/musical director Mike Jellick, bassist Ben Williams, and drummer Nate Winn are strong, supple & sensitive players who seem to be inside the pulse and at the heartbeat of Jesse's every phrase, nuance and quirk. They seem virtually telepathic in their ability to frame, shade and embellish what Jesse extracts, from the underbelly, to the soul, guts and glory of any lyric. This trio, much more than a 'back-up' band, lends greatly to the sense of these tunes not being merely copied, but fully interpreted and realized. Seeing the light might be easy for some, difficult or impossible for many others. But in the case of Jesse Palter's fine debut effort, with infinite promise down the road, an illumination of sorts should be something all listeners will surely be able to sense, feel, and actually hear! -Michael G. Nastos, Senior Music Host/WEMU, 89.1FM (Ypsilanti, Mi.,) Cadence Magazine, All Music Guide, Downbeat Critics Poll Jesse Palter started singing before she could talk. She hasn't stopped -- and she doesn't plan to any time soon. 'There are videos of me when I was a baby -- I was barely getting the words out, but the melody was there,' she says. 'I can't tell you the time when I got 'into' music because I was always into it. It was natural.' At just 20 years old, through both training and pure instinct, Jesse has grown into one of the most accomplished and dynamic singers (and songwriters) in the Detroit jazz and overall music scenes. Her voice is a flexible, facile instrument wielded by an ambitious and visionary player, it can be sweet or salty, polished or raw, wide in range and broad in stylistic scope, channeling and combining influences such as Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Kurt Elling. It's the voice of someone who has a voracious appetite for growth and is fearless in that pursuit -- the perfect equation for a promising future. 'I've grown so much -- musically, harmonically, as a thinker in general,' says Jesse, who took Outstanding Jazz Vocalist honors at the 2006 Detroit Music Awards. 'Instead of just getting on the bandstand and playing off-the-cuff standards, we have our own unique interpretations of the classic songs as well as my original compositions. Working with such accomplished musicians, we are constantly pushing each other to expand outside of the box. This dedication has taken our group to the next level'. It's fair to say that singing is in Jesse's blood. Her grandmother, Dorothea Ranier, was an opera prodigy in New York who continued singing throughout her life. Jesse's father, who harbored his own ambitions to be a DJ, was raised in a musical household, which he passed along to his family, keeping plenty of Motown, show tunes, Beatles, Michael Jackson, Prince, Carole King, Stevie Wonder and Tony Bennett on the home stereo. The precocious Jesse started singing publicly at age five and learning piano at six. She subsequently studied oboe and trumpet and attended a middle school that specialized in the performing arts, where she starred in a number of theatrical productions. In fact, the first public indication that jazz lay in her future came during rehearsals for 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,' when Jesse, playing the narrator, began 'embellishing' the melodies, although the director admonished her, she also told Jesse's mother that Jesse had a natural inclination towards improvisational singing. 'That's when I started listening to a whole bunch of jazz records,' Jesse recalls, 'and really immersing myself in the language of improvisation.' However, she was also conscious of the parade of adolescent and teen stars soaring up the pop charts and decided that maybe she could do that, too. She began contacting producers such as Detroit's Jeff and Marky Bass (Eminem, 50 Cent) as well as Andrew Gold (Linda Ronstadt, Celine Dion). But despite some interesting sessions, Jesse's path was already taking her in different directions. 'I never felt quite at home,' she says, 'until I finally started performing jazz.' Her persistence paid off in getting the University of Michigan School of Music to allow her to be part of it's jazz program as a vocalist -- a course of study the school didn't offer at the time. But after hearing Jesse audition, they struck a compromise in which she agreed to take classical voice classes ('Working on my vocal hygiene,' she says) while studying jazz theory and improvisation with legendary artist/instructors such as Donald Walden and Dennis Wilson. During the past two years, Jesse has forged her reputation as a live performer throughout the Detroit area, racking up credentials by sharing stages with Marcus Belgrave, James Carter, Dr. Teddy Harris, Keith Hall, Paul Keller and others. Now on leave from school, she's been studying at 'Mike Jellick University,' working tirelessly with the music director and pianist of her Jesse- Shop: odax

Chamber Music Favorites with Alto Saxophone
Harry Hindson, DMA Harry Hindson graduated from Ottawa,IL Township High School in 1966, and was a member of the concert band directed by Ray Makeever that appeared at 1964 Midwest, 1965 IMEA, and 1966 Dorian Conventions. He received his BA in Music Education from Luther College in 1970, where he was Dorian Music Society President and band soloist, premiering Luther College music theory professor and composer Maurice Monhardt's 'Concert Piece for Alto Saxophone and Concert Band' at Lincoln Center with the Luther College Concert Band, under the direction of Weston Noble. Seven years of military service followed as saxophonist with the U.S. Navy Concert Band in Washington, D. C., where he founded the Navy Band's first saxophone quartet, and was selected Sailor of the Quarter. Concurrently, he earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Maryland. In 1977 he returned to the midwest to participate in family farm projects and teach at Waubonsee Community College, in Sugar Grove, IL, and begin a commuter woodwind studio serving schools in Ottawa, Oswego, and Naperville. In 1979 he began a long-standing friendship with Ron Keller and the Naperville Municipal Band by guest-soloing on the spring concert, and he has soloed yearly with the group since. He married Jean Pederson--also a Luther College alum--in 1982, and her position in Spanish at UW-LaCrosse brought them north in 1984. At that time Harry began doctoral studies at UW Madison which led to a DMA in 1992. Active as a saxophone soloist and clinician, his teachers have been Jack Williamson, Larry Livingston, Donald Sinta, George Etheridge, and Les Thimmig. Currently a very busy musician in the Coulee Region, he is a bassoonist with the La Crosse Symphony, principal clarinetist with the La Crosse Concert Band, occasional saxophonist with the Great River Big Band, and double reed section leader, conductor and soloist with the 132nd Army National Guard Band in Madison, WI. In addition to his private studio, he is currently adjunct professor of Saxophone at Luther College, and adjunct woodwind instructor at Winona [MN] State University. He has also worked for Central and Logan High Schools in La Crosse, and St. Mary's University, in Winona. With Jean being an able bass clarinetist, and now blessed with two musically inclined daughters, this is a family that attends a lot of concerts! Harry joined the WI ANG Band in 1987, and has helped guide development of clarinet and saxophone ensembles to augment the fine brass ensembles providing valuable musical support to the WI National Guard. His interest in music for larger saxophone ensembles was whetted doing background work for his dissertation, The Saxophone in American Musical Culture 1850-1980, and flowered with the acquisition and restoration of a vintage bass saxophone. He performs frequently on the entire family of saxophones, having appeared extensively in recital, and as soloist/clinician with school and municipal bands, at state and national music conventions, and at the National Music Camp at Interlochen, MI. He has regularly soloed with the LaCrosse Concert Band, and has appeared with the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra, and the LaCrosse Symphony Orchestra. The CD This CD is a collaborative effort by members of the LaCrosse Symphony Orchestra to leave a lasting performance legacy through a modest recording project. Since the saxophonist offered to do the groundwork, the music has a focus on the saxophone in the chamber music context. The relative rarity of a saxophone in a chamber music environment enhances the interest of many music lovers.- Shop: odax

New Day
John has performed classical guitar music publicly for 30 years, in both casual and concert settings. In the words of Register Guard music critic Fred Crafts, "Jarvie is a spectacularly gifted artist who commands the fingers of a virtuoso and the sensitivity of a poet." His special gift, however, is the impact he has on his audiences. After John's concerts, audience members invariably tell him how moved they were by his music. A reviewer wrote that John's listeners "sat breathlessly" during one concert, and seemed "spellbound" by another performance. John grew up in a household filled with music. His mother was a violinist, and his father played accordion and classical piano. He began serious study of the guitar as a teenager, studying with Ralph Towner, and later with Michael Lorimer and Scott Kritzer, as well as taking master classes with David Russell, Alice Artst, and Sharon Isben. He earned his Music degree at the University of Oregon. In 1971 he designed and initiated the Guitar Studies program at the U of O Music School, and taught there for 12 years. He taught concurrently at Lane Community College in Eugene, and continues to teach there. Beginning in 1971, John has given concerts to enthusiastic audiences in many Northwest venues, most notably performances of the Concierto de Aranjuez with the Eugene Symphony, and a shared program with renowned flautist Paul Horn at the Portland Civic Auditorium. In the 1990's he set aside his concert career to pursue another line of work which provided a more secure income for his family. ,However, after a number of years, John's love of music drew him back to performing again. Since then, he has given solo concerts in Eugene, Portland, and Florence, (Oregon), and San Diego as well as numerous private performances. ,Recently John collaborated with the Ballet Fantastique of Eugene. He appeared with the ballet in Eugene's Hult Center for the Performing Arts, as well as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Green Show in Ashland. John is also a guitar builder. ,He began experimenting with guitar design in the 1970's, with the goal of achieving better resonance and projection. ,Since 2001 he has focused more seriously on guitar making. ,He refined his unique design and he now produces guitars with great volume and richness. ,John plays his own guitars in concert, he made the guitar he played for all his YouTube videos. ,He builds instruments for other guitarists, as well.- Shop: odax
