The Viking Heart: How Scandinavians Conquered the World
From a New York Times best-selling historian and Pulitzer Prize finalist, a sweeping epic of how the Vikings and their descendants have shaped history and America Scandinavia has always been a world apart. For millennia Norwegians, Danes, Finns, and Swedes lived a remote and rugged existence among the fjords and peaks of the land of the midnight sun. But when they finally left their homeland in search of opportunity, these wanderers-including the most famous, the Vikings-would reshape Europe and beyond. Their ingenuity, daring, resiliency, and loyalty to family and community would propel them to the gates of Rome, the steppes of Russia, the courts of Constantinople, and the castles of England and Ireland. But nowhere would they leave a deeper mark than across the Atlantic, where the Vikings' legacy would become the American Dream. In The Viking Heart, Arthur Herman melds a compelling historical narrative with cutting-edge archaeological and DNA research to trace the epic story of this remarkable and diverse people. He shows how the Scandinavian experience has universal meaning, and how we can still be inspired by their indomitable spirit.- Shop: buecher

Operation Chaos: The Vietnam Deserters Who Fought the CIA, the Brainwashers, and Themselves , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 776min
From a political cult to the heart of the Washington establishment - the bizarre and untold story of how the CIA tried to infiltrate a radical group of US military deserters during the Cold War. Stockholm, 1968. A thousand American deserters and draft resisters are arriving to escape the war in Vietnam. They're young, they're radical, and they want to start a revolution. The Swedes treat them like pop stars, but the CIA is determined to stop all that. It's a job for the deep-cover men of Operation Chaos and their allies' agents who know how to infiltrate organizations and destroy them from inside. Within months, the GIs have turned their fire on one another, and the group dissolves into interrogations and recriminations. When Matthew Sweet began investigating this story, he thought the madness was over. He was wrong. Instead, he became the confidant of an eccentric and traumatized group of survivors, each with his own intricate theory about the traitors in their midst. All Sweet has to do is discover the truth...and stay sane. Reminiscent of Jon Ronson's The Men Who Stare at Goats and as compelling as Ben McIntyre's Agent Zigzag, Operation Chaos, Michael Sweet's fascinating journey of discovery, sheds new light on one of the great untold tales of the Cold War, where the facts are wilder than any work of fiction. ungekürzt. Operation Chaos: The Vietnam Deserters Who Fought the CIA, the Brainwashers, and Themselves , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 786min
Operation Chaos is an untold Cold War story: how the CIA tried to infiltrate a radical group of US military deserters, an audiobook that leads from a bizarre political cult to the heart of the Washington establishment Stockholm, 1968. A thousand American deserters and draft resisters are arriving to escape the war in Vietnam. They’re young, they’re radical, and they want to start a revolution. Some of them even want to take the fight to America. The Swedes treat them like pop stars - but the CIA is determined to stop all that. It’s a job for the deep-cover men of Operation Chaos and their allies - agents who know how to infiltrate organizations and destroy them from inside. Within months the GIs have turned their fire on one another. Then the interrogations begin - to discover who among them has been brainwashed, Manchurian Candidate-style, to assassinate their leaders. When Matthew Sweet began investigating this story, he thought the madness was over. He was wrong. Instead, he became the confidant of an eccentric and traumatized group of survivors - each with his own theory about the traitors in their midst. All Sweet has to do is find out the truth. And stay sane. Which may be difficult when one of his interviewees accuses him of being a CIA agent and another suspects that he’s part of a secret plot by the British royal family to start World War III. By that time he’s deep in the labyrinth of truths and half-truths, wondering where reality ends and delusion begins. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Steve West. A Warrior Dynasty: The Rise and Fall of Sweden as a Military Superpower 1611-1721 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 628min
This audiobook examines the meteoric rise of Sweden as the pre-eminent military power in Europe during the Thirty Years War during the 1600s, and then follows its line of warrior kings into the next century until the Swedes finally meet their demise, in an overreach into the vastness of Russia. A small Scandinavian nation, with at most one and a half million people and scant internal resources of its own, there was small logic to how Sweden could become the dominant power on the Continent. That Sweden achieved this was due to its leadership - a case-study in history when pure military skill, and that alone, could override the demographic and economic factors which have in modern times been termed so pre-eminent. Once Protestantism emerged, via Martin Luther, the most devastating war in European history ensued, as the Holy Roman Empire sought to reassert its authority by force. Into this bloody maelstrom stepped Gustav Adolf of Sweden, a brilliant tactician and strategist, who with his finely honed Swedish legions proceeded to establish a new authority in northern Europe. Gustav, as brave as he was brilliant, was finally killed while leading a cavalry charge at the Battle of Ltzen. He had innovated, however, tactics and weaponry that put his successors in good stead, as Sweden remained a great power, rivaled only by France and Spain in terms of territory in Europe. And then one of his successors, Karl XII, turned out to be just as great a military genius as Gustav himself, and as the year 1700 arrived, Swedish armies once more burst out in all directions. Karl, like Gustav, assumed the throne while still a teenager, but immediately displayed so much acumen, daring and skill that chroniclers could only compare him, like Gustav, to Alexander the Great. This book examines thoroughly, yet in highly readable fashion, the century during which Swedish military power set an example for all Europe. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mark Ashby. Cnut the Great: The Life and Legacy of Scandinavia's Most Famous King , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 84min
King of all England and Denmark and the Norwegians and of some of the Swedes (Cnut's self-proclaimed title) "Knut was exceptionally tall and strong, and the handsomest of men, all except for his nose, that was thin, high-set, and rather hooked. He had a fair complexion none-the-less, and a fine, thick head of hair. His eyes were better than those of other men, both the handsomer and the keener of their sight." (Knytlinga Saga) In a sense, Cnut the Great was practically destined for greatness, if only because he came from a distinguished Danish royal family. Cnut's father was Sweyn Forkbeard, and his grandfather was Harald Bluetooth, both prominent and legendary kings of Denmark. Meanwhile, his mother was the widow of the Swedish king Erik the Victorious, the daughter of the Polish duke Mieszko, and a sister of the Polish king Boleslav Chrobry. Thanks to his background and his own abilities, Cnut became the most prominent of the Danish kings of England (from 1016), but he was also, at times, king of Denmark (from 1018-1019), Norway (from 1028), and parts of Sweden (after 1026). During his reign, he united England, protected Denmark, and had a lot of influence throughout Scandinavia, a remarkable feat that he managed to accomplish through careful alliances and diplomacy, yet most often through direct force. For that reason, Cnut has been referred to as the greatest Anglo-Saxon king of England, despite the fact he wasn't actually Anglo-Saxon. His death in 1035 came shortly before the Norman conquest of England by William the Conqueror. For centuries, the Vikings had been raiding throughout the region, including in the British Isles, and Cnut's campaigns represented the apex of that activity. Somewhat ironically, Cnut is one of the best-documented leaders of the Vikings, a civilization that fascinates people mostly because they still seem mysterious and different compared to their European counterparts. ungekürzt. Guilty: Liberal 'Victims' and Their Assault on America, Hörbuch, Digital, 351min
Liberals seem to have hit upon a reverse Christ story as their belief system. He suffered and died for our sins; liberals make the rest of us suffer for sins we didn’t commit. Who are the victims here? To hear liberals tell it, you'd think they do nothing but suffer at the hands of ruthless entities like the "Republican Attack Machine" and Fox News. Really? It’s just another instance of the Big Lie, of course, told so often that some people have actually started to believe it. In Guilty, Ann Coulter explodes this myth to reveal that when it comes to bullying, no one outdoes the Left. Citing case after case, ranging from the hilariously absurd to the shockingly vicious, Coulter dissects these so-called victims who are invariably the oppressors. For instance: Single mothers: Getting pregnant isn’t like catching the flu. There are volitional acts involved - someone else explain it to Dennis Kucinich. By this purposeful act, single mothers cause irreparable harm to other human beings - their own children - as countless studies on the subject make clear. The myth of the Republican Attack Machine: The most amazing thing liberals have done is create the myth of a compliant right-wing media with Republicans badgering baffled reporters into attacking Democrats. It's so mad, it’s brilliant. It's one kind of lie to say the Holocaust occurred when the Swedes killed the Jews. But it's another kind of lie entirely to say the Holocaust occurred when the Jews killed the Nazis. "Brave" liberals: In addition to being beautiful, compassionate tribunes of the downtrodden, liberals are brave. I know that because they’re always telling me how brave they are. Why, five nights a week, MS-NBC’s Keith Olbermann courageously books guests who completely agree with him. It doesn’t get much braver than that. Obambi's luck: While B. Hussein Obama piously condemned attacks on candidates' families, his media Language: English. Narrator: Ann Coulter. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/rand/002941/bk_rand_002941_sample.mp3.
